Daycare centres in Lübeck become smart with DIGIMONDO's IoT software

The "digital daycare center" in Lübeck measures noise, CO2 and temperature using a DIGIMONDO app.

The Internet of Things is often associated with technical processes. But IoT solutions can also be of great use in education. This is shown by the "Smart Kita" project of the  utility company in Lübeck. Netz Lübeck has been a customer of DIGIMONDO for several years and has set up a city-wide LoRaWAN network. Since November 2019, three day-care centres in Lübeck have also been using this network.

The daycare centres are equipped with multi-sensors that anonymously record temperature, humidity, carbon dioxide, volume, brightness and movement. The data is sent to our IoT platform niota via our IoT network server firefly. There the IoT data is analysed and visualised in an app developed for the day-care centres.

In the daycare center, the digital data then leads to practical instructions for action: If the CO2 concentration in the room becomes too high, the daycare center manager receives an alarm on her iPad. She or her staff can then open a window. Too high a CO2 concentration promotes the transmission of diseases and reduces the children's ability to concentrate. The head of the day care centre would like to use the app from DIGIMONDO to teach the children topics such as temperature, humidity and volume as well as numbers and units of measurement. The Kita supervisors can also use the analysis option in the IoT platform: They can see in the app and at noise traffic lights at which times the children are particularly loud and restless. In the long run, they can thus adapt their pedagogical programme and offer a round of games in the garden instead of an activity in the room at certain times.

The daycare project in Lübeck is a good example of how cities can make their IoT networks and the associated digital services available to public buildings for their facility management. Lübeck's public utility company is gaining practical experience with measurement technology, data transmission and evaluation, while the daycare center is improving the well-being in its rooms. The benefits of the Internet of Things are opening up to all citizens with projects like the "Smart Daycare".
