Create more safety for people whose places could be affected by floods

IoT is the key: Creating more safety for people whose places could be affected by floods — IoT makes it possible. With the help of early warning systems, critical conditions can be identified quickly and reliably. In this way, IoT makes it possible to prevent and initiate protective measures. The Internet of Things early warning system collects data that is collected by rain sensors or sensors in sewage pipes as well as in urban drainage systems. This can be used to warn people in the event of an imminent flood. Examples of this are already widely available. Whether on Lake Constance, in Lusatia or in southern Lower Saxony — IoT supports digitization in water management and provides security against flood events.

Together with REMONDIS Aqua, we have created a successful project in niotix.

Intelligent flood management: The project by REMONDIS Aqua and network operator EURAWASSER Goslar in the area of heavy rain management in the city of Goslar enables the sustainable management of retention facilities during flood events. The conditions of the widely distributed rain retention basins in and around the city of Goslar are made transparent by REMONDIS Aqua LoRaWAN sensors combined with the Digimondo platform. Based on the data obtained on fill levels and amounts of precipitation, actuators on pumps and weirs can thus be specifically controlled in a wide-ranging system to ensure that the city is drained during extreme weather events. This protects the infrastructure and population of the historic city of Goslar, which has already been severely affected by floods in the past. The REMONDIS AQUA flood management system is currently being further developed and expanded with Niotix as one of the core elements of the EXDIMUM Extreme Weather Management R&D project funded by the BMBF.

Customer challenge:

  • Increase in heavy rain events by around 20 percent since the mid-1980s.
  • The still rather coarse-meshed network of weather stations in Germany still does not allow precipitation to be detected early in small-scale areas.
  • It is therefore very difficult to predict floods with precise locations.

DIGIMONDO solution:

  • With the help of proven ultrasonic technology, water levels can be monitored.
  • This is where Wilsen from the Pepperl + Fuchs Group comes in. Depending on the intended use, the sensor offers different ranges. Thanks to the intuitive WILSEN app, it is easy to configure and start up the sensor. Thanks to its downlink capability and a minimum transmission cycle of 10 minutes with a resolution of 1 mm, the Wilsen is ideal for use in level monitoring.
  • Based on the data obtained on fill levels and amounts of precipitation, actuators on pumps and weirs can be specifically controlled in an extensive system to ensure that the city is drained during extreme weather events.

Added value & customer benefits:

  • This protects infrastructure and the population, which has suffered severe damage due to heavy rain events in the past.
  • With the help of early warning systems, critical conditions can be identified quickly and reliably.
  • In this way, IoT enables prevention and the introduction of protective measures.
