Description
Rostock's freight and fishing port GmbH (RFH) relies on Digimondo — and creates a digital testing ground for energy, emissions and safety.

The company

Rostocker Fracht- und Fischereihafen GmbH (RFH) is a port company founded in 1990 on the Baltic Sea. The main business areas are port management, real estate and property development and the operation of a modern cold store. With its strategic location and expansion of rail infrastructure, RFH is a central hub for trade in the Baltic Sea region.

The challenge: Minimize emissions, maintain safety, increase efficiency.

The RFH was faced with the challenge of minimizing emissions (noise, pollutants, odors), introducing digital energy management and at the same time ensuring grid stability and safety aspects. Without IoT, there was a lack of data so far, making processes inefficient and susceptible to faults.

The solution: end-to-end digitization with Digimondo

As part of the DigiNet RFH project, a comprehensive LoRaWAN and fiber optic based sensor network was set up. With the niotix IoT platform, consumption data, emissions and device conditions could be recorded, digitally displayed and monitored in real time.

The platform enabled:

  • Digital energy management
  • Peak load monitoring
  • Optimizing shore power consumption of seagoing vessels

In addition, use cases such as noise and particulate matter measurement, ammonia detection, gate and door monitoring and asset tracking were successfully integrated. Based on the live data now available (weather, noise and dust), handling can be controlled directly so that the requirements and limits of StAlumM (MV Environmental Agency) can be checked and complied with. At the same time, the environmental and operational data collected supports compliance with ESG reporting requirements, as relevant sustainability indicators are provided transparently and comprehensibly.

Implementation architecture

  1. Sensor network: installation of gateways, LoRaWAN and special sensors for noise, dust, temperature, ammonia, vibration and electricity.
  1. Niotix IoT platform: device management, digital twin, dashboards, alert rules and CSV exports.
  1. Data integration: Complete visualization and export options for internal analyses and external evidence to authorities.

Results: Measurable effects on all levels

  • Setting up a digital test field in the port
  • Transparent data on emissions, energy and safety
  • More efficient energy management with peak load monitoring
  • Reducing manual readings and process optimization
  • Strengthening the security architecture in an ISPS-secured port
  • Basis created for further smart port innovations

Customer voice

“With DigiNet RFH, we have created the basis for digital port operations. With the niotix IoT platform, we have valid data on emissions, consumption and device conditions for the first time — and can sustainably optimize processes.” Steffen Knispel — Managing Director, Rostocker Fracht- und Fischereihafen GmbH

Lessons learned: Best practices for digitizing industrial companies

  • Holistic Approach: Combining Energy Management, Emissions Control, and Safety
  • Standardised IoT platform as a central basis
  • Early integration of sensors and emissions simulation is crucial
  • Digital twins as enablers for transparency and verification requirements
