Digimondo and AVSystem joined forces to create a fully automated, interoperable and future-proof remote meter reading solution - helping utilities in the DACH region meet EED requirements while boosting efficiency and transparency. The joint initiative aimed to help energy suppliers and municipal utilities in the DACH region comply with the EU Energy Efficiency Directive (EED) while significantly improving operational efficiency and data transparency.

Challenge:
The customer needed to meet new legal requirements under the EED (Energy Efficiency Directive) and its national implementations (such as FFVAV - a German regulation that mandates the use of remotely readable meters for recording and billing district heating and cooling consumption), mandating monthly consumption data for private customers. Traditional reading methods and gateway-based infrastructures were costly, complex and not scalable for large deployments.

The main business and technical goals were:

  • Reliable and secure communication over existing mobile networks (NB-IoT).
  • Legal compliance with EED and national regulations.
  • Reduction of total cost of ownership (TCO) through standardized, open technologies.
  • Elimination of on-site gateway installations, reducing maintenance and operational overhead.

Solution:
The project introduced a retrofit NB-IoT metering solution that combines smart connectivity modules, the Digimondo niotix IoT platform, and AVSystem’s Coiote IoT Device Management platform based on the LwM2M standard.

  • Smart Meter Connectivity Modules
The metering modules are integrated directly into heat meters and transmit data securely over the NB-IoT network. They can operate on battery power for up to 10 years, making them ideal for large-scale and hard-to-reach installations (e.g., basements).
  • Digimondo’s niotix Platform
Niotix serves as the central data hub, aggregating and harmonizing metering data from multiple communication technologies (NB-IoT, LoRaWAN, wM-Bus). It enables utilities to visualize, analyze and forward data in real time to billing or ERP systems. The open and hardware-independent architecture ensures vendor neutrality, low IT overhead and scalable integration with existing systems.
  • AVSystem’s Coiote IoT Device Management
Acting as the device management layer, Coiote ensures full lifecycle management of the modules using the Lightweight M2M (LwM2M) protocol. This includes provisioning, configuration, monitoring and firmware updates — all performed remotely.Such cloud-agnostic, standards-based approach guarantees security, scalability and regulatory compliance. In addition, AVSystem provides enterprise-grade 24/7 technical support, ensuring the long-term stability of deployments.

Integration Architecture:

  • Digimondo’s niotix receives, processes, and visualizes the metering data, providing APIs for downstream systems (billing, analytics, reporting).
  • NB-IoT modules send measurement data using the LwM2M SEND operation that enables proactively push data to the server helping to save bandwidth and support event-driven communication.
  • AVSystem’s Coiote provides full lifecycle of connected devices over LwM2M - from zero-touch onboarding and configuration to FOTA/SOTA updates, alerting, and integrations backed by enterprise-grade security and reliability.

This standardized integration eliminates proprietary dependencies, ensuring interoperability and future scalability.

Results and Benefits:

  • Future-proof interoperability – open standards (LwM2M) and vendor independence enable easy expansion to other metering domains (heat, water, electricity, gas).
  • Fully automated remote meter reading – no manual intervention required.
  • Cost-efficient architecture – no need for gateway installation or maintenance.
  • Legal compliance – fulfills the EED and FFVAV requirements for monthly consumption reporting.
  • Improved network transparency – daily transmitted readings help detect anomalies and peak load periods.
  • Sustainability impact – better energy monitoring supports optimized resource use and contributes to climate protection.

Key Takeaways
This collaboration demonstrates how open standards, interoperable technologies and strategic partnerships can drive the digital transformation of utilities. By combining:

  • An enterprise-grade device management solution (AVSystem),
  • Advanced NB-IoT connectivity modules (hardware partner),
  • A scalable IoT data platform (Digimondo), and

utilities achieve a robust, compliant, and future-ready metering ecosystem — paving the way for smarter, greener cities.

For whom is this?
The solution is ideal for:

  • Municipal utilities
  • Grid operators
  • Energy and water meter manufacturers
  • System integrators
  • EED-compliant billing service providers
